Abigail Lovett manages The Passage Inn, a resort located in the North Carolina town of Cutter’s Pass. The town is known for its hiking and close proximity to the Appalachian Trail, but it is also known for a different tragic reason – in the past 25 years, 6 hikers have gone missing from the town. Then, 4 months ago, another person disappeared – Landon West, a journalist who was investigating the missing hikers. When his brother Trey arrives in town looking for answers, Abby realizes how far the town will go to protect its residents.
First off, this book is told from Abby’s point of view and I have to say that it was really refreshing to read a mystery book told from only one person’s point of view. I feel like lately, I’ve read so many mystery books that are told from five different character points of view and then I’m trying to remember all the different characters while switching from one character pov to the next and it was nice not to have to do that here. I knew I was reading Abby’s point of view and it didn’t change.
I also felt like the one-person point of view built up the suspense because I didn’t know what everyone else was thinking. I only knew what Abby was thinking and her thought process and I was with her the entire time. I was trying to put together the clues with Abby and trying to figure out what had happened to the missing hikers.
I loved the setting of Cutter’s Pass. It seemed to be the kind of place that would be picturesque in all seasons. Cutter’s Pass serves as a destination for tourists who enjoy hiking but it also had the vibe of a small town that doesn’t like it when people ask questions. It looks to be a little bit behind the times, but that is part of its appeal. The police department appears to be made up of the sheriff and one receptionist. There is a small downtown area that has some shops and a couple eating establishments, as well as a hiking goods store that keeps rental locker records in a physical notebook.
There were a couple of twists that I was not expecting and more than one red herring that I still have questions about. There are a lot of suspicious characters and I probably thought everyone was guilty at least once. I thought this book was quite enjoyable and I found myself looking forward to reading it and finding out what happens next.
This is the first book I’ve read by Megan Miranda but maybe I will have to check out her other books.

I love a book that is set in a picturesque town… and then you want to move there.
