Hannah Brooks is an Executive Protection Agent, aka a bodyguard. She takes her job very seriously and is not thrilled when she is assigned to protect movie star Jack Stapleton from a middle-aged stalker. Jack has returned home to his family’s Texas ranch to be with his family while his mom recovers from surgery. He doesn’t want anyone to know he has a stalker, not to mention a bodyguard, so Hannah finds herself pretending to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover story. Hannah knows their relationship is a lie but the more time they spend together, the more real it seems.
I wasn’t sure if I would like this book since it is written in first-person narrative. First-person narrative is always hit or miss for me because sometimes the character can be too quirky or annoying. I feel like there is a fine line between having a character with a funny inner monologue and one whose inner monologue is irritating. Plus, I never know if I actually like it when characters break the fourth wall and talk to you. Luckily, I found Hannah to be fun and I really enjoyed all her inner thoughts.
And we get a lot of thoughts from Hannah. Hannah is going through some personal issues and is looking for something to take her mind off her heartbreak. Enter Jack and his family who adopt Hannah and pull her out of her doldrums. There are a lot of emotional and heavy moments but there is a lot of laughter in this book as well.
The book is a bit predictable (what romance novel isn’t?) but that was okay. There are some great secondary characters, like all of Jack’s family and Hannah’s boss; we won’t talk about Hannah’s boyfriend who happens to be a coworker. I do wish that Hannah’s other coworkers had more presence in the book, but I understand the book is all about Hannah and Jack, not Hannah and her coworkers.
I had so much fun reading this book. Fake dating is one of my favorite romance tropes and be warned, the romance doesn’t appear here until almost the end of the book. But I think it was totally worth it.
I absolutely loved this book.
