For four friends living in a retirement home, Thursdays are the day when they get together to talk about unsolved murders. But when a murder occurs right in their backyard, the Thursday Murder Club finds themselves in the midst of a live investigation. Can they solve the case before the police do?
I’ve actually had this book for a while now; I think it came in one of my book subscription boxes. I wasn’t planning on reading it but one of the ladies in my book club picked it for this month’s read so I dug it out of my pile of books to donate and started reading.
Honestly, I was not expecting to like this book so much. I thought it was clever and funny and I absolutely loved all the characters. I can only hope one day to live long enough to reside in a retirement community with a bunch of fun and interesting people like the ones in the book.
All of the members of the Thursday Murder Club were intriguing, but I found Elizabeth to be the most fascinating. I could never figure out if half the things she was saying were true. Parts of the book are told from the point of view of Joyce, as we read her journal entries. The other members of the club are Ibrahim and Ron, two men who bring their own insights to the group. Rounding out the characters in the book are PC Donna de Freitas and DCI Chris Hudson, the two police officers who are investigating the murder and who get entangled with the club members.
The mystery kept me guessing. I had my suspicions as to who the killer was only to be completely wrong in the end. There were a lot of times in the book where the murder took the back seat to the shenanigans of the friend group, which I really liked. I found the friends and their club to be the most enjoyable part of the book. I thought it was hilarious the way they would use the stereotypes of old retired people to sneak into places they weren’t supposed to be and ask imposing questions. I also laughed at the way almost everyone in the club couldn’t operate all the new-fangled tech items like video calling (even though I feel like a lot of senior citizens can).
I really liked this cozy mystery and am now wondering if I need to the next books in the series.
