I can’t believe it’s already time to look back at my favorite reads from last year! Truthfully, I don’t know if my tastes have changed or if books are getting worse but I did not have a lot of favorite books this year. Looking back at my Goodreads account, the majority of the books I read I ended up rating as either 3 or 4-stars. I only had one 5-star book this year (at least as of the time I’m writing this). I also feel like I’ve been more inclined to rate books as 2-stars, which I’m not sure if that just means I’m becoming more discerning in my ratings or if the quality of the books I’m reading has declined.
As I’ve said before, I track my reading on Goodreads. It’s always fun to look back on books I’ve read during the year. There’s always at least one book I’ve completely forgotten the plot of or a book that I find myself thinking, I can’t believe I read that book this year. I also rate the books I’ve read on a scale of one to five stars.
I had one 5-star book this year:
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
I honestly did not think I would like this book as much as I did. I was fully prepared to hate it but I got sucked into this world of dragons and I was hooked. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty entertaining.
Here are some other 4-star books that I really liked:
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
I read this book at the beginning of the year and it has remained one of my favorites. Read my review here.
Cover Story by Susan Rigetti
The ending of this book made me rethink everything I had just read.
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
Another book that I didn’t think I would like until I read it. I mean, why wouldn’t I like it – it’s a cozy mystery set at a retirement village. Read my review here.
The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie by Rachel Linden
This was just a lovely book that had all the feelings in it. A great book to read on a rainy day. Read my review here.
The Last One by Will Dean
I can’t really call this book a favorite of this year, but this book is definitely one that I can’t stop thinking about. Read my review here.
Drowning by T.J. Newman
I included Falling by this author on my list of favorite books from last year. I guess I really like this author because their 2023 book was entertaining as well. I just have to remember not to read these books about plane crashes right before I go on a trip. Read my review here.

How did I not know you read The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie?? I thought it was so so cute too. Fourth Wing blew my mind but I’m still worried about reading Iron Flame. It’s gonna happen but maybe after the holidays. Can’t wait to see what’s on your TBR for 2024!!
