When Francis Adams was a teenager, a fortune teller told her that one day, Francis would be murdered. Francis spends the rest of her life trying to figure out how she will die. Years later, she invites her great-niece Annie to her estate in the country to discuss her will. But when Annie arrives, she finds Francis dead. And then it is revealed that Francis’s fortune will go to the person who can solve the mystery of how Francis died.
This was a cute murder mystery book. I might even call it a cozy mystery, although I’m not sure it is marketed that way.
I thought the premise of this book was really interesting and the title really hooked me. I confess that based on the title, I did think that Francis was going to have left a bunch of hints and things for Annie to find and figure out. I thought that we would find out at the end that Francis knew who her killer was and that she had left clues for Annie to solve. But nope, this is your basic murder mystery.
The book is told in two timelines – the present time and flashbacks to the past, starting when Francis received the murder prediction. This timeline is told in excerpts from Francis’s journal that Annie finds in the house. Honestly, I found the journal entries to be a bit boring. I thought the present timeline with Annie trying to solve the murder was much more exciting.
There are a lot of characters in this book, and it was hard to keep track of everyone. I had to make a list of all the characters and write down who everyone was. Some characters show up in the past and the present, so you have to remember that the lawyer at the beginning of the story was also Francis’s friend’s boyfriend when they were teenagers. Plus, a lot of the characters are related so you have to remember their family lines as well. It got a bit confusing at times.
This book is the first in a series that looks like it will be about Annie solving murders in the town. I liked this book and I think I will probably read more, mainly because I was hoping for romance between Annie and the police detective and I need to see if this happens in the second book.
