Rose’s cousin is eloping to Miami, and Rose is determined to give her the best St. Olaf wedding with all the St. Olaf traditions. Not wanting to attend the wedding by herself, Dorothy decides to try video dating to find a date, but the man she meets turns out to be a dud. When a dead body is found on the premises where the wedding is going to take place, it turns out to be Dorothy’s failed suitor and she becomes the main suspect. Can the four friends get Dorothy out of trouble, solve the murder, and pull off a St. Olaf wedding?
This is the first book in the Golden Girls Cozy Mystery series based on the Golden Girls TV show. If you loved the show, then you will love this book. I thought the characters were spot on, and I couldn’t help but read all their dialogue in their voices from the show. It was a delight.
The author really got the voices of the characters down. We were treated to many of Sophia’s wisecracks and Dorothy’s sarcasm. Rose was full of St. Olaf references, and Blanche just wanted to flirt with every guy. Their personalities really showed through and I think that’s what made the book work. If we had no knowledge of these ladies beforehand, I don’t think the book would have been as enjoyable. The nostalgia was a huge part of the zeal of the book.
The book wasn’t perfect, but it was entertaining. There were a little too many St. Olaf references, and some of the “undercover” work done by the ladies made me roll my eyes. I also would have liked the book to focus more on the murder than the wedding. Similarly, I found it a bit implausible that Dorothy would be the main suspect and that the police would have no other leads.
Get out your baggy Jordache jean jacket and grab your cheesecake and get ready to be charmed by these four friends!
