Katie Lightfoot has moved to Savannah to help her aunt and uncle run their bakery. While working there, she discovers that her aunt is a witch and her “book club” is actually her coven. Not only that, but Katie is a witch too. When a woman is murdered right outside the bakery and Katie’s uncle becomes the prime suspect, Katie and her aunt use their magic to clear his name and uncover the real killer.
This is the first book in a paranormal cozy mystery series. I loved the bakery setting because there is so much discussion of baked goods and desserts that it made me hungry while reading. The magic was interesting, although I found myself wishing there was more of it. Since Katie is brand new to magic, I’m guessing the magical elements become more prominent as she learns and grows throughout the series.
The characters were interesting, although there are quite a few introduced throughout the story. Besides Katie and her aunt and uncle, we also meet her aunt’s coven, which consists of four other women. Honestly, I had a hard time keeping track of everyone at first. The standout character, however, might be Mungo the dog. He was adorable, and I would happily read more books featuring him.
The mystery itself was well plotted. There were plenty of suspects with plenty of motives, and I didn’t guess the killer before the reveal. I wasn’t completely sold on the killer’s motive, which felt a little underwhelming, but considering that no one seemed to particularly like the victim, I suppose it worked well enough.
The main thing I didn’t love about this book was that it seemed to be setting up a love triangle. If you know anything about me, you know I do not like love triangles. Honestly, I could have done without the romance altogether, especially because I wasn’t a fan of one of the love interests and absolutely despised the nickname he gave Katie. I disliked him so much that it somewhat soured the series for me, and I’m not sure whether I want to continue if he’s going to play a major role going forward.
This is a cute paranormal cozy mystery if you enjoy witches, baking, and romance. Unfortunately, despite there being a broomstick on the cover and in the title, there were no broomsticks to be found anywhere in the book.
