So far this year, I’ve read 45 books. I know there’s still a month left in 2019, but as I usually read holiday-themed books in December, I thought I would look back at some of my favorite books I’ve read this year.
I keep track of my reading on goodreads. I like goodreads because I find it an easy place to track my books read. You can create “shelves” which are basically categories for your books. I track the month and year that I read a book, if it’s one I checked out from the library, what format the book is (hardback, paperback, or ebook), and I rate the book on a scale of one to five stars. I love being able to look back at the books I’ve read and to see a snapshot of my reading life.
Here are my 5-star reads this year:
Recursion by Blake Crouch
I can’t stop thinking about this book. It was mind-bending and thought-provoking and I don’t understand how Blake Crouch comes up with this stuff. I couldn’t put this book down. Read my review here.
Bad Blood by John Carreyrou
This book about the collapse of the multibillion-dollar startup Theranos was riveting. I didn’t know much about the company or its founder Elizabeth Holmes prior to reading this book and I was amazed at what I learned. I still find myself shaking my head at what went on there. Read my review here.
Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik
I really liked this space opera novel. It had a space princess and an outlaw on the run together, traveling through space in their futuristic spaceship. It was fun and I already have the sequel on my to-read list for next year. Read my review here.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
I recommend this memoir to all my friends. Michelle Obama is an amazing writer and is so inspiring. I didn’t think I could respect her any more than I did and then I read this book. I was blown away. Read my review here.
And a couple of 4 star reads that are still stuck in my head:
The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch
I loved this sci-fi novel about time travel. The way the author talks about time travel was so different than anything I’ve read. The whole book was fascinating and I 100% recommend this book. Read my review here.
The Ice Princess by Camilla Läckberg
This Nordic crime novel had all the twists and turns and kept me guessing until the end. The main characters were intriguing and I loved the Sweden setting. Read my review here.
I find it interesting that two of my 5-star reads are non-fiction. I don’t read a lot of non-fiction but I guess if two out of the four non-fiction books I read this year made it into my top picks, maybe I should start reading more non-fiction books.
