To celebrate her and her husband’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, Grace has planned a romantic trip to Paris. But what she didn’t plan on was her husband wanting a divorce instead of a trip. Grace decides to make the trip to Paris by herself and while there, meets a young woman named Audrey. Audrey has escaped to Paris and left her alcoholic mother back in London. Despite not knowing how to speak French, Audrey has managed to become employed at a bookstore. When Grace and Audrey happen to meet, everything changes and the two become friends as they help each other out – Grace will teach Audrey French and Audrey will help Grace figure out who she is without her husband.
I thought this was a sweet story about friendship, family, and healing. Although Grace and Audrey could not be more different, they both compliment each other and bring each of their best qualities. I really liked their friendship and how they looked out for one another.
I do kind of wish there was more Paris in the story. I wanted more descriptions of the city and of the food. I would have even liked just a little bit more description of the bookshop that Audrey and Grace work in. What there are a lot of descriptions of is picnics – is that a thing in Paris? Do people actually go on picnics and eat their cheese and baguettes and olives while sitting in the grass by the river?
I liked this heart-warming and charming novel.
