Harriet and Wyn were engaged but broke up six months ago and still haven’t told their best friends. When they both arrive at the Maine cottage for their friend group’s annual vacation, they decide to pretend they are still together so that they don’t spoil anyone’s fun. But can they fool their friends and make it through the week?
I mentioned in a previous post that Emily Henry has become an auto-buy author for me. Or at least an auto-borrow from the library author. I’ve enjoyed all of the books I’ve read by her, although some more than others. I thought this book was a great read and I can’t wait to see what she writes next.
I loved the relationships and chemistry between all of the characters. The six friends form this beautiful found family full of acceptance and love. I know this book is a romance and Harriet and Wyn are the main characters but I really would have liked to have more friend scenes and more scenes of them just hanging out and talking.
I also really liked the writing. Emily Henry writes some magnificent prose and dialogue. She is all about the metaphors in this book. Her characters are witty and can banter like nobody’s business, although there were times I thought they were too on point. Surely, no one can be that clever all of the time.
I didn’t love the way we were kept in the dark regarding the reason for Harriet and Wyn’s breakup. For over half of the book, we are reading about how Harriet is heartbroken and it’s so obvious that these two people love each other and want to be together but for some reason, they aren’t. I found it really frustrating and just kept thinking to myself that I didn’t understand why they weren’t together. It felt like the book was missing something and everything would have made more sense if we knew why Harriet and Wyn separated. It isn’t until the last third of the book that the reason they broke up comes to light and then we learn that it was all due to a miscommunication which, to be honest, is one of my least favorite tropes.
Honestly, the last 100 or so pages of this book made up for everything. The pace really picks up at the end (although the ending was a bit too rushed), everything that the book had been building to escalates, and we finally get answers to all my questions.
I liked this book but I think Book Lovers is my favorite Emily Henry book so far.
