Eileen Merriweather has been looking forward to her book club’s annual getaway at a cabin in the Catskills. However, when everyone in the book club cancels and can’t make it, she decides to go on her own. On the way there, her car breaks down and she finds herself stranded in a town, a town that starts to feel eerily familiar. Eileen soon realizes that she is stuck in the town from her favorite book series, a series that unfortunately was left unfinished when the author suddenly died. All of Eileen’s favorite characters are here, trapped in their stories, including someone new – a grumpy bookstore owner named Anders. Eileen thinks she must have been drawn to the town to finish what the author started only it seems like Anders doesn’t want her to complete the story.
This book was cute and I really liked the premise. Who wouldn’t want to run into and talk to their favorite characters? I loved this little bit of magical realism and fantasy. I feel like I’m always left wondering if characters really get a happily ever after when I finish reading a book. Eileen gets to interact with the characters to see what happens next and I thought that was super interesting.
That being said, I found the romance between Eileen and Anders to be a bit lacking. It seemed to come out of nowhere and I felt like there wasn’t a lot of chemistry between the two. Honestly, I found both of these characters to be a bit forgettable. The only thing I can remember is that Anders has minty green eyes (because the author kept mentioning this) and that Eileen’s friend could get her to do anything just by singing the “Come On Eileen” song.
I have to confess – I finished reading this book a couple weeks ago and when I sat down to write this review I couldn’t remember much of what the book was about. I had to go into goodreads and read the synopsis again to jog my memory. I guess what I mean to say is that I liked this book, but didn’t find it especially memorable like the author’s other books.
