This year, I decided to expand my capabilities and embark on little monthly challenges. Some of them are financed-based, some are fitness-based and some are just for fun. I really have no rhyme or reason for the challenges, I just wanted something to focus on for each month.
For some reason, this blog post took me so long to write. I know that it is June 24 and almost the end of the month, and I am just barely writing this post about May. I almost gave up and skipped this month but the whole point of these posts is to be accountable and to reflect on what I did. So here is my blog post, 24 days late.
The challenge:
For May, the challenge was to journal every day.
The parameters:
I wasn’t sure what challenge I was going to do this month. I found myself scrolling through Threads and I came across a post from a user named artfullyjournaled. She was hosting a Cozy Journaling Challenge in May, intended to help people start or restart their journaling habit. Every day, for 30 days, she posted a cozy journaling prompt on her Threads account. You could write as much as you wanted, but the goal was to just write.
How did I do?
This was another fun challenge! I love journaling but I’m not always consistent. Also, I tend to just write in whatever is around so I have journal entries in my notes app, in my email drafts, in random notebooks scattered around my apartment. I guess I really need to get all those together. Even though I probably have about 10-15 blank notebooks hanging around my apartment, I tend to grab what’s closest or in my bag. But I wanted to prioritize journaling and I thought this would be a perfect way to do that.
Some of the prompts were “A cozy ritual that always makes me feel safe is:”, “My current cozy obsessions are:”, and “The book I’d crawl into if I could live in its world for a day:”. Some of the prompts were easier to write about than others and some I kind of struggled with. I know that struggling to write something down kind of defeats the purpose of cozy journaling but I wanted to at least try to write something every day.
It was really difficult to make the time to journal every day, even though a lot of times I only wrote for about five minutes or less. I had to remember to check and see what the prompt was and then I had to write about it. I always wanted to wait until the end of the day to journal because I never knew if I would have enough time to get all my thoughts down. What if I just sat down to write something quick before I left for work, and then it turned out that I had a lot to write and then I would run out of time before I had to leave? These were the thoughts that were going through my head. I found myself writing a lot right before I went to sleep.
Lessons learned:
It’s really challenging to remember to do something every day. I had to tell myself it was ok if I missed a day and I could always write two entries the next day if I wanted. I learned that I really do miss journaling and I need to do it more!
I’ll be back next month with a new challenge.
