Tatum is a waitress in a small town diner who is in love with one of her regulars, June. When June has to take a trip to New York but has no one to go with her since she has just been dumped by her girlfriend, Tatum volunteers to go along. Meanwhile, in New York, Eleanor has just been fired from her job as a publicist and is desperate to get out of the city. Enter the house swap. Tatum and June go off to New York and stay at Eleanor’s condo, where they meet Eleanor’s neighbor, an aging movie star. Eleanor goes off to Illinois to stay at Tatum’s home, where she promptly meets Tatum’s sibling, Carson.
If you think this book sounds like the movie, The Holiday, you would be correct. This book is basically The Holiday, but queer.
Both couples were fine, although I had some issues with each. I didn’t understand Tatum’s reasoning for saying no to dating June when they were both so clearly in love with one another. And then she seems to change her mind super fast, with no explanation. I didn’t really get Eleanor and Carson’s romance – it was very insta-love with them jumping into bed together almost immediately after meeting, and I kept waiting for some sort of conversation between them where they would talk about themselves, but instead all we got was “vibes” and hooking up.
There was a lot of witty banter, especially between Eleanor and Carson. Which look, I love witty banter, but no one is ever that witty all the time. Whenever I read pages of characters exchaning witty banter and always having a snappy comeback, I always find myself rolling my eyes.
Honestly, I did not care for the ending of the book. I am a private person and am not into public proclamations or proposals. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than a public proposal in front of family and friends. I am so glad that when I was growing up, promposals and flash mobs were not a thing; I think I would die if I were put on the spot like that. I thought the ending of the book was super cheesy and it did not work for me at all.
